Yucca is a genus of more than 40 perennial plants, shrubs, and trees, but only a few are grown as houseplants under the label yucca plant, most commonly the Yucca guatemalensis.
Yuccas are native to Mexico and the Caribbean—they are visually interesting and slow-growing plants. This plant is extremely easy to grow and is tolerant of changing conditions throughout the year, such as light, humidity and temperature.
The best conditions for a yucca plant include a sunny corner with relatively low humidity. Place a young plant on a pedestal plant stand to show it off. Older plants make a bold architectural statement in any room, so put one in a spot where it will get the attention it deserves. Those pointed leaves punctuating the air are something to admire.
Yucca plants naturally grow in sandy, dry deserts. Inside, plant your yucca in a loose, well-drained potting mix. Yuccas are extremely drought tolerant but highly sensitive to overwatering. Keep this desert native on the dry side, especially in winter.
