Up for sale is my Advent AV290 Mini Bookshelf Speakers and Subwoofer set. The AV290 delivers excellent multimedia/musical performance. It features a total power output of 50W and includes a 30W subwoofer designed with Advent's unique wall mountable enclosure.
Some history on the Advent name. Henry Kloss, a MIT graduate, was a prominent American audio engineer and entrepreneur who helped advance high fidelity loudspeaker and radio receiver technology. Over his career he co-founded several significant audio and video equipment manufacturing companies including Advent Corporation.
The AV290 is a top-notch three-piece system. The mini bookshelf speakers (10 watts of power per channel) are a little unusual, as they can be used independently of the subwoofer. The right-hand speaker contains the preamp and amp and all controls; the left speaker contains the drivers only. The audio drivers consist of a 3-inch woofer in a well-designed ported enclosure, as well as a ¾” polycarbonate cone/dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet. Each speaker contains a real crossover, complete with lowpass and high pass filters. The specified x-over frequency is 3kHz.
Controls are standard fare: Volume, mute, treble, and contour (bass, that lowers mid response as it is turned up). The subwoofer also has gain control.
If one only uses (only) the Bookshelf speakers there is no power button as such- after a minute of no signal, the speakers automatically enter a standby mode. The same thing can be accomplished manually with the mute button. If you use the set (3 pieces) the subwoofer becomes the power supply and it has an on/off push button. The set also enters a low power mode if there is no audio.
The subwoofer is also unusual. First, it is flat: only 4.5-inches high. But it is also large, with each other side running about 13-inches. It is designed to either lay flat on the floor with the driver facing down, or mounted to the wall with the driver facing the wall.
The subwoofer contains a well-filtered power supply with a 75VA (20-0-20) toroid transformer that provides power for the whole system. The amplifier for the sub is made up of discrete components, with complementary output devices, and it is rated for 30 watts. All the boards and larger components (power caps, etc) are buried in silicone, apparently to dampen the vibration the parts might be subjected to. The driver is 6.5-inches in diameter and features a treated paper cone with a rubber surround, lastly the enclosure is ported.
NOTE: The two bookshelf speakers have glue remnants from self-stick foam pads the the sides. I did not want to remove them as it is not my area of expertise. I show two photos where you can see them.
