This beautiful Umber brown Zenith Bakelite radio is a very rare find!
It comes from a non-smoking environment and has no foul orders or nicotine residue.
It’s all original with the exception of the vacuum tubes that were replaced and the electronic components used to restore the circuitry.

It showcases the brand's quality craftsmanship that the Zenith Company was producing during the WWII period.
That was a time when radios were the most important item in the household for staying informed and entertained.
This model 5D-611 is a vintage collectible treasure made in the United States and features that sleek “Art Deco” design that was so popular back in the 1930s and 40s.

Condition:
It has been completely electronically restored and is stable and safe to use.
The Bakelite case has some scuffs as to be expected, but is otherwise in excellent condition with no cracks, missing pieces, or repairs.

The chassis is clean with no rust or rot, and the original speaker is loud and clear.
The radio also features an internal loop antenna that provides good strong reception, eliminating the need for an external antenna wire. However, there is an external antenna terminal on the back to provide an antenna connection to pull in those weak satiations if necessary,

The original backboard was dry rotted and flaking to pieces since it was made only of cardboard, and has been replaced with a new hand-made backboard made from several layers of non-corrugated stiffened cardboard, in exactly the same style as the original - see pics…

This radio will make a great “safe functioning” addition to any antique collection, and can very well become the collection’s center piece.

Restoration work performed:
• All tubes tested and replaced where needed
• Power supply filter capacitors replaced
• All tubular capacitors replaced regardless of condition
• All resistors tested and replaced where found to be out of spec
• New dial scale pilot light installed
• New dial cord installed
• Non-polarized power cord replaced with a safe new polarized power cord
• All solder joints checked for poor connections and re-soldered where necessary
• All corroded wiring replaced where needed
• R.F and I.F tuned circuits re-aligned to factory specs
• Rotting cardboard back-board replaced with new hand-made stiffened cardboard back
• Bakelite case, Dial scale and dial window cleaned and polished


Important Note - (Power supply safely changes)…
Most of the A/C D/C radios from this era had a design flaw affectionately known as the “Hot Chassis”, which was a shock hazard that was present whether the radio was turned on or off. If you were to touch the chassis and at the same time touch a ground source such as a water pipe, there was a 50% chance that you were in for a nasty shock!
This was a result of designing the circuits to run on either A/C (alternating house current), or D/C (batteries), which was needed back then because many homes and most farms had no electrical service or wiring yet.
The power supply circuit in this radio has been modified to eliminate this design flaw and no longer has this built-in shock hazard! The trade-off to making this change was to disable the ability for the radio to run on batteries.
It is now wired to run only on normal household AC power. Not a great loss compared to the gain in personal safety!
