The Signal Corps were responsible for establishing communications both behind and in front of our combat lines. They mostly used Morse code along with several other types of codes for security reasons. The Service Buzzer Model 1914 replaced the earlier field buzzers, the cavalry buzzer and the field artillery telephone.
Description
The U.S. Army Signal Corps Model 1914 Service Buzzer is contained in its original leather case, which measures 7"W x 5"D x 3 1/2"H. The top of the leather case is embossed with information indicating the contents, which reads:

The inside of the lid also has the complete instructions as well as schematics for the unit, and retains the original data plate, which reads:

The Model 1914 was a bit different than standard buzzers, as it also had the ability to be used as a telephone as well, and there is a microphone and earpiece still included inside of the set, with complete wiring. The leather case even has a circular inlet area with soft leather so that the telegraph key can still be used while the case is closed. A very useful function while in the field.
This is a lovely piece of communications equipment history from "The Great War".
