For sale is a Vintage and Very Rare Large Merck Pharmaceutical Apothecary Style / Industrial Jug with the original wood shipping crate
I can't find any markings on the crate itself but it seems correct for the jug. (This is how I got it years ago).
The lid of the jug is marked with the criss-crossed Merck company logo. From this style logo I believe the jug to be from the 1940's to 1950's era. Very collectible and hard-to-find - great for someone who is into old pharmaceutical jars and similar items.
- The lid is either bakelite or plastic, I'm not sure which. The lid has no cracks or pieces missing.
- Jug is overall Excellent Condition - the wire bail of the handle has some light rust
- Bottom of jug is marked with a logo in the center with either a capital "I" or "T", and the numbers 7 and 3 on each side of it. I don't believe the "73" is a date because I'm almost certain this is much earlier than 1973, and also later than 1873.
- Jug Dimensions: 17" tall x 9" diameter
I don't know what originally came in the jug. I have only ever seen one or two other jugs of this size for sale in many years of looking. I don't know if this was used to hold some type of bulk chemical that was used in the pharmaceutical manufacturing process. I just know that you won't see many jugs of this size come up for sale, so if you are a collector of pharmaceutical items this could be a great find!
Adding to its value is that it comes with the original wood shipping crate. The cardboard inside the crate looks old, but I don't know if it originally came in the crate or if someone just put it in there to give the jug more cushioning.
